Visit to the Israel Museum

Choice of Tours

During your visit, you will have a choice of the following curator-led tours of current exhibitions (choose one):

1. Adornment: Jewelry and Body Decoration in Prehistoric Times

Byron and Dorothy Gerson Temporary Exhibition Gallery, Samuel and Saidye Bronfman Archaeology Wing

Exploring the fascinating subject of prehistoric personal ornamentation from its earliest beginning in the Middle Paleolithic age, this exhibition includes some of the world’s most ancient jewelry, including a 120,000-year-old shell necklace, the oldest outside Africa, discovered in a cave in Israel. The exhibition sheds light on the meaning of jewelry and other forms of body ornamentation in prehistoric human societies; their use as a means of personal and group identity and affiliation; the mundane and ritualistic use of ornaments and body decorations; and more.

2. Back to Aleppo – A Virtual-Reality Tour of the Great Synagogue

Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Wing for Jewish Art and Life

Maximum number of participants: 8

The Great Synagogue of Aleppo in Syria, one of the oldest and most important in the Middle East, was built between the fifth and seventh centuries CE and served a thriving Jewish community that was renowned as an economic and spiritual center. The synagogue was destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries – most recently in the 1990s – but was completely destroyed in 2016 during the civil war in Syria. In this exhibition, visitors are invited to travel through time on a virtual-reality tour of this ancient synagogue, where Jewish prayer continued uninterrupted until the late twentieth century.

3. Doug Aitken: Flags and Debris – Choreography in the Desolate City

Bella and Harry Wexner Gallery

Flags and Debris weaves together the sights and sensations that the COVID-19 pandemic instilled on the urban landscape, body, economy, and human spirit. During the first lockdown in 2020, multi-disciplinary artist Doug Aitken (born USA, 1968) sought to continue making art by creating collage works using clothes and textiles he found within the walls of his own home. These textile works convey verbal messages that reflect the uncertainty and spirit of the times. In collaboration with the LA Dance Project, he later created a series of spectator-less performances within the city’s abandoned industrial areas by dancers cloaked in the textile collages. These were translated into a monumental three-channel video installation, projected on large-scale screens in the gallery.

2. Sigalit Landau: The Burning Sea

Nathan Cummings Building for Modern and Contemporary Art, Edmond and Lily Safra Fine Arts Wing

Sigalit Landau (born Jerusalem, 1969) is one of Israel’s most prominent contemporary artists, as well as an artist of international repute. This major exhibition represents the culmination of her two decades of creation at the Dead Sea, a location that has become the artist’s laboratory, medium, workshop, and endless source of inspiration. The Burning Sea presents a selection of Landau’s Dead Sea artworks of the last two decades, from glittering salt- encrusted sculptures, through video works and photographs. Landau’s salt works are created almost ritualistically by immersing objects in the saline waters of the Dead Sea. Over time, the submerged objects become heavily coated with layers of salt crystals, transforming them into fragile creations imbued with a terrifying beauty that is both apocalyptic and mesmerizing. The works included in this exhibition reflect a wide range of cultural, social, and political issues within the reality of Israel today, as well as drawing attention to momentous environmental issues.
