About Havat Hashomer
Havat HaShomer is a military training base in the lower Galilee that is operated by the IDF Education and Youth Corps. This base trains soldiers from special populations including minorities, new immigrants, uneducated youth, and youth with low socioeconomic or criminal backgrounds, providing them with individual attention in a supportive environment that enhances their skills and motivation. The training at the base aims to bring out the best in these soldiers from at-risk backgrounds and to equip them with tools that they need to serve in the Israeli army and to integrate into Israeli society.
About the Mandel IDF Educational Leadership Program
The Mandel IDF Educational Leadership Program was launched in 2005, in collaboration with the IDF Education and Youth Corps, to help ensure that senior IDF officers are well equipped to serve as educational leaders, not just military commanders, in their various units and professional roles. The program is directed at IDF commanders from corps and units across the IDF, usually at the rank of major, lieutenant colonel, or colonel.
The program expands fellows’ knowledge and experience in the realms of leadership and education in military contexts, by introducing them to cutting–edge theory, practice, and content areas that are relevant to their work, and exploring current questions in the areas of education, society, and identity. In particular, the program helps fellows clarify their views and goals, examine various personal and professional questions related to their role as military commanders, identify educational needs in the IDF, and develop a variety of educational initiatives to address those needs.
Subjects studied include education and society, educational challenges in the IDF and Israeli society, foundations of moral philosophy, values–based education, identity formation, theories of leadership, and models of educational leadership.
Program graduates initiate, develop, and lead educational processes that are in the spirit of the Israel Defense Forces and will have a significant impact on their own military units and beyond.
On other days, when you click on the “People” square, you will find photos and short biographies of the people you will meet.
We will not be meeting with representatives of Mandel units today.
Information about all the Mandel units can be found in the booklet Shaping Israel's Future
